Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
Approximately 10 percent of American adults suffer from this sensorimotor disorder, which causes uncomfortable and sometimes tingling, creepy crawling feeling in the legs. The discomfort is alleviated by movement and is usually worse in the evening.
Primary RLS
- Most common type
- Familial or idiopathic
Secondary RLS
- Caused by separate underlying medical conditions, for example:
- Iron deficiency (ferritin levels < 50)
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Pregnancy
- Kidney failure
RLS
- Can affect anyone at any age
- Tends to get worse with age
- Can be managed with lifestyle changes and medical treatments
