Diaphragm Use and Care

A diaphragm is a soft rubber cup that fits over your cervix, the opening to your uterus. You must use a spermicide gel for the diaphragm to be effective as a birth control method. With proper use, the diaphragm's effectiveness is as high as 98%. The diaphragm will not provide protection against sexually transmitted infections, such as AIDS and hepatitis B.

USE:
Your diaphragm may be placed into your vagina up to six hours before intercourse. The closer insertion is to the time of intercourse the more effective it will be. You must always leave the diaphragm in place for at least six hours after the last act of intercourse. If you repeat intercourse within this period of time do not remove the diaphragm, you must protect yourself by adding more gel with a vaginal applicator. Do not douche or remove your diaphragm for at least six hours after the last act of intercourse. You may take a bath or shower. It is advised that you remove your diaphragm within 24 hours.

INSERTION:
Before inserting the diaphragm, urinate and wash your hands. Be sure to use a contraceptive cream or jelly, it is absolutely necessary for good protection. Place at least one teaspoon of gel in the bowl of the diaphragm and spread the gel around the rim. Hold the diaphragm with the spermicide facing up and press the opposite sides of the rim together between your thumb and third finger. You can hold the diaphragm from above or below. Push the compressed diaphragm gently inward along the rear wall of the vagina (back towards your backbone, not straight in) as far as it will go. Keep your index finger on the outer rim of the diaphragm and use it to help guide the diaphragm into place. Use your index finger to push the front rim up until it is in place just above the pubic bone. Check to feel the "dimple" of your cervix through your diaphragm so that you know it is covering the opening to your uterus. You should also check to make sure the front rim of the diaphragm is tucked behind your pubic bone. When the diaphragm is correctly positioned, you should not be aware that it is in place.

CARE:
After each use wash your diaphragm with mild soap and water and allow it to air dry thoroughly before returning it to its case. Never leave in sunlight or expose to strong cleaning solutions. Before each use hold your diaphragm up to the light and inspect it for holes or deterioration. It is advised that you replace your diaphragm every 3 years; sooner if needed.
